Benedict de Spinoza

"The 'Natural Inferiority' of Women." What arguments does Spinoza use to support the idea of female inferiority? What was the basis of his claims and assumptions? How would you refute these arguments? What was the effect of his line of reasoning upon the roles women could play? (p. 463)

Spinoza believed, as did many others of his time, that women were inferior because of nature. It was not men who "instituted" them, women just simply fell under the authority of men. He makes a point where no where in the world there is a Female ruler, ruling over men. He thinks that if such a thing were ever to happen, it would be a waste of mens abilities. "women cannot rule alike with out great hurt to peace" In my opinion, i do not respect Espinoza's view on this, or anyone else who shares it. One would think that seeing as how men NEED women to bare children, and progress the world, they would show more respect toward them. Of course women rarely rule over men, men use force and violence to become authority figures. He clearly ignores females rulers from the past of others countries who had taken power and yes, ruled over men. Espinoza hides anything that contradicts his belief, and it seems he sadly begins to believe his own lies.

Benedict de Spinoza argued that women are inferior to man becuase through out the entire world's history there have never been rule of women over men. He claims that the only women that ruled were the Amazons who allowed men to stop by their country but killed all of their male offsprings.

The arguments that Spinoza use to support the idea of female inferiority is that no where in the world there is a Female ruler, ruling over men or in the entire world's history there have never been rule by a women. He also says that women have not by nature had equal rights to men. He states that men and woman can not rule alike without the great hurt to peace. I think that Spinoza is wrong in his claims because their have been women rulers and there are some women stronger then men.

Spinoza claims that women are inferior and that men control them.
His claim is that women do not have equal rights as men due to nature. He also says that if women rule peace in the world will be unheard of. Spinoza is wrong because there were woman rulers in his time and they did pretty well, and they were very powerful.

Spinoza assumes that nature has made women inferior to men and that women allow men to dominate them.

An obvious refutation to this, is that although a woman may look frail or weak, she can still be as good a ruler as any man, she just hasnt received the opportunity because of the patriarchal society in which she lives. The effect of Spinoza's reasoning only strengthed the already chauvanistic males of that day, using science to "prove" men superiority.
